Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by surrounding yourself with art, culture, and community.

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is a day for celebration, and more importantly, it is a day of service. The California African American Museum (CAAM) in Exposition Park combines both of those elements and also provides art and culture for the community.
CAAM hosts an MLK Day celebration on Monday, Jan. 16, that starts at 10 a.m., goes until 5 p.m., and has an array of vibrant programs and activities for all ages.
“MLK Day is a time to commemorate the legacy and make Dr. King relevant today,” said Tyree Boyd Pate, history curator and program manager at CAAM. “We hope that the afternoon will allow members of our community to coalesce around the idea that King’s dream hasn’t been fulfilled, but it’s actively being fulfilled every single day when we interact with one another.”
On the patio, people will be able to enjoy music and food from award-winning food trucks. There will be arts and crafts for children, where they will be able to design buttons and posters using words, pictures, and quotes from Dr. King. They will be able to create crowns to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy. And they will be able to create maps with words about how they can change the world.
There will also be a marathon reading of Dr. King’s speeches.
To honor Dr. King’s legacy of service, a number of community service organizations throughout Los Angeles will be on hand to pass out information and answer questions about supporting their efforts of year-round local community service.
